Hackberry
Celtis occidentalis
Hackberry is a durable, large tree that is pyramidal at youth, developing a broad crown with arching branches at maturity. Attracts birds, because of the small purple fruits. The bark when the tree is mature is gray, rough and corky. Light green, elm-like foliage turns light yellow in fall. Hackberry is a rapid grower, to provide shade, windbreak, or erosion control. Drought tolerant. Tolerates wide variety of soils, urban environments and windy conditions. Matures at 35-55'; 40-55' spread. (zone 2-7) Needs full sunlight. |
