Red Oak Quercus rubra 1999 Iowa Tree of the Year. Tree is a fast grower and develops into a quality shade tree quickly. Acorns are around 1" long with a brown cap. Leaves emerge a pinkish reddish color, then turn glossy green in summer. Fall foliage is a russet-red to bright red. Leaves persist into winter. Prefers well-drained, acidic soils. Matures 55-75'; 50-65' spread. (zone 4-8) Needs full sunlight. |
