White Oak Quercus Alba A large, long-lived tree for large, wide open areas. Pyramidal when young, becoming broad-rounded with age. Often getting wider than tall. Foliage emerges grayish-pink changing to dark glossy green in the summer. Flowers are catkins. Tree also has acorns that are 3/4 to 1" long covered by a cap that is light chestnut brown. Native to Eastern and mid-western US. Fall foliage varies from red to wine. Bark is light gray and scaly as it matures. Disease and salt resistant. Drought tolerant but intolerant to flooding. Matures at 50-80'; 60-80' spread. (zone 4-9) Needs full sunlight.
